Developing previous and ongoing research, IF investigates relevant locations in and around the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. This will involve investigating samples of domestic, industrial and commercial buildings, sites, monuments, landscapes, and other features and spaces, dating to the late 1700s – to mid-1800s; or earlier contexts with activity potentially dating to this time.
Research primarily focuses on two districts in Derby: the Cathedral Quarter, and Nun’s Green, with comparisons from the adjacent Friar Gate district; the nearby industrial village of Darley Abbey, with comparisons from the adjacent rural villages of Allestree and Markeaton; the market and industrial town of Belper, with comparisons from the nearby rural village of Duffield; the industrial village of Cromford, with comparisons from the nearby spa of Matlock Bath; terminating in the north with the spa of Buxton. Hinterland sites, including nearby lead mining areas; and (pre-)historic monuments and landscapes near to these locations; will also be considered. Evidence from other locations will be integrated where relevant. These study areas and locations may be adjusted, and possibly expanded, as the project progresses.
